Guidance Coach Responsibilities

The role of the Guidance Coach at InnovOak School is to support students in both academic planning and personal development. From enrollment, coaches guide students in course selection and skills development, ensuring they meet graduation requirements and are prepared for post-secondary pathways.

Guidance Coaches help reinforce InnovOak’s educational philosophy, integrating the LifeREADY Core Competencies and Speak Math approach into their advising. This fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, aligning with the school’s holistic approach to student development.

Academic Planning and Monitoring

Guidance Coaches work closely with students to create individualized academic plans, placing them in appropriate courses and helping them access advanced options like AP Capstone. Regular monitoring of student progress and communication with both students and parents ensures alignment with academic goals. Coaches must track performance, provide feedback, and offer strategies to address academic challenges.

Post-Secondary Preparation

Guidance Coaches assist students in understanding post-secondary education requirements and trends, helping them build strong college or university applications. This includes advising on course selection, extracurricular involvement, leadership opportunities, and application deadlines. Coaches ensure students are aware of the academic performance and profile needed for competitive post-secondary applications.

Personalized Development

Starting in Middle School, Guidance Coaches collaborate with teachers to support students' learning styles and strengths. Coaches offer guidance on course direction and long-term academic planning, encouraging students to express their ambitions early to facilitate advanced pathways where needed.

Future Planning in a Collaborative Role

Effective communication is essential. Guidance Coaches maintain regular contact with students, parents, and teachers, providing timely support and adjustments. Collaboration with the administration ensures all students are on track for graduation and post-secondary readiness.

Guidance Coaches help students identify future academic and career goals, offering support on course selection and preparation for post-secondary success. Through this forward-looking approach, coaches ensure students are well-prepared for life beyond InnovOak.
