Attendance and Lateness
There is an established link between student absenteeism and academic success. Regular attendance in class is critical to students’ learning and achievement of course expectations. The goal of our attendance procedure is the creation of an optimal teaching/learning environment for staff and students.
To ensure regular attendance by students, attendance expectations and procedures will be clearly communicated to both parents and students through the student handbook, at parent information sessions, on the school website, and on individual course of study outlines.
For Grade 9-12, frequent lates and absences put the minimum credit hours (110 hours) in jeopardy. Students may not attend classes on a casual or part time basis, as credit hours are tracked and are a mandatory requirement for course completion. Students are expected to attend all classes in the mode that has been decided (i.e., in person when required, off site when required, or online when required) and participate in all synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
When a student’s frequent absences from class is jeopardizing their successful completion of a course, the subject teacher will contact the student and parents/guardians to explain the potential consequences of the absences, which may include failure to gain credits and/or removal from the course. They will discuss steps that should be taken to improve attendance. Student Success will be involved in the discussion, in the development of a learning plan, and in the monitoring of student progress; further interventions will be implemented as needed.
